Metal Security Scanners in Stores, Airports, Schools
Maintaining security in commercial establishments is a must. There are just too many people that could get hurt at any moment. The worst thing that could happen is for a bomb to go off or for someone to start shooting people. To prevent these incidents, using security scanners in stores and offices is now a necessity.
Metal scanners, also known as metal detectors, can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. At airports and malls, you will see handheld metal scanners and the ones that look like doorways. Treasure hunters and mineral hunters use ones that look like a long pole with a round disc at the end.
For maintaining security, the handheld scanner, like the CSI Pro-Pointer with Holster, is the most recommended. Security metal scanners such as the popular Garrett scanners are easy to use since all you have to do is wave them in front of an object, and they will be able to detect if there is some form of weapon or contraband item.

How Metal Scanners Work and Why They Are Used
Guns, bombs, knives, and contraband items such as drugs wrapped in foil could be used to harm others. Guns can kill, drugs can be used to ruin people’s lives, and bombs can destroy entire buildings and the people inside. Security metal scanners are used to detect these before a person can bring them inside.
There are three different kinds of metal scanners: Very Low Frequency (VLF) metal detectors, Pulse Induction (PI) metal scanners, and beat-frequency oscillator (BFO) metal scanners. The first two are quite powerful and are used to find minerals deep below the ground. Security scanners are often BFO scanners.
When the coils inside the handheld metal scanner pass over a metal object, they create a magnetic field over that item. This disrupts the radio waves passing through the metal scanner and alarms the user that the scanner has detected a metallic object.
Their advantage is that they are small, lightweight, and versatile. You can wave a Garrett Superwand over a person’s clothes or their bags, or even over large boxes to check if there is something questionable you and the rest of the security team might want to go over.
So why are metal detectors for sale just about everywhere you go? The reason is that businesses want their establishments to be safe – safe for their assets and safe for the consumers. It would be a bad day for business if a bomb goes off or someone is selling drugs to minors inside the store.
Metal detectors are needed for schools. You never want a student to come in to class with a dangerous weapon like a knife or a gun, even for self-defense. Students can be irrational and aggressive, and they might kill someone unintentionally within the school’s premises.
Security scanners will also check the staff and teachers. Sometimes, it is the adults who are not thinking straight, so having something easy but accurate to use is important. You will want to use these scanners at the entrances to ensure no one, young or old, gets inside the school carrying anything questionable.
Schools are not the only places to use metal scanners. A shopping mall is another establishment that requires top-of-the-line security. You can have large walk-through doors to check individual people, but to double check the contents of their bag, you might want to use a handheld metal scanner, too.
Airports are the most obvious places where handheld scanners are needed the most. They can prevent airplane hijackings and kidnappings from taking place. A lot of people have been afraid of airports and airplanes since the 9/11 attacks, which is why these metal detectors are crucial for making people feel safe again.
Metal detectors are also used for investigation. Sometimes, the evidence can’t be seen simply by looking around. Detectives can use a handheld metal scanner to locate bullet casings, metal shards, pieces of lost or stolen jewelry, and more. If the eyes can’t see all the details, then surely the metal scanner will.
What to Look for in Metal Detectors
When it comes to metal detectors, you have to know what features you are getting. There are wands that can detect even the smallest of jewelry, some that are self-calibrating, and options to shut off the device momentarily just in case ambient metal, like a belt buckle, is passing by.
Garrett is the brand that most people trust when it comes to security scanners, and for good reason. The company has been around since 1964. Just about every airport, shopping mall, college, and military base uses Garrett top security scanners.
This is because they have all the features you need. Consider the Garrett SuperScanner V. It has self-calibrating capabilities so you will not need to fine-tune it over and over again. It can detect even the smallest metal objects. And it can distinctively detect a pistol from a 9-foot distance.
And then there is the Tactical Hand-held Metal Detector (THD) with Holster. This one is best for night operations because of its silent vibration alarm and compact design. It has a built-in flashlight, too. It is waterproof, and the holster lets you keep it within reach at all times.
The CSI Pro-Pointer is a less powerful metal scanner and is calibrated this way to pick up small evidence such as shotgun shell casings or small pipes or knives that might have been used as weapons. As the name suggests, this security scanner is best used for investigative purposes.
If you want nothing but power, then there is the Garrent SuperWand. This can detect everything: ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, and stainless steel. This is the metal detector you will want if you are hosting an event with VIP attendees because it guarantees topnotch security.
The Metal Detector Rechargeable Battery Kit is an accessory. If you are going to use any of these handheld metal scanners, then you will need this as well. It can charge the batteries used for the THD, the SuperScanner V, the SuperWand, and the CSI Pro-Pointer. It charges 2 batteries at a time.
